Worldwide, millions of children and adults are learning English. The University of Missouri online Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program will challenge you to discover new ways to expand your views of teaching and culture by bringing together educators from across Missouri, the nation, and the world.

Our online program gives you the practical tools you need to reach students who do not use English as their primary language.

Teaching English encourages you to discover new ways to expand your views not only of teaching, but also of the world.  The best part of teaching English is that you will come to learn as much about another person’s language and culture as they will about yours.

Online course delivery makes learning flexible and enjoyable. You choose the option that fits your personal and professional goals. Whether you teach domestically or internationally, MU’s online TESOL program is for you.

  • The master's degree (M Ed) is 33-credit hours and is intended for individuals who are currently teaching or who are interested in teaching ESL/EFL in various types of educational settings. Note: The TESOL focus area will not appear on your diploma or your official MU transcript.
  • The graduate certificate program consists of 18-credit hours and is designed for recent college graduates, career changers, or retirees.
  • If you already have initial teaching certification and want to add certification in ESOL, this 21-hour Missouri ESOL certification preparation program is for you.
