Online education is an integral part of the University of Missouri's educational mission. The University seeks to strengthen its presence as the premiere provider of distance education in the Midwest, recognized for its innovative, high-touch, interactive, quality programs aligned with workforce needs of the region, and for providing outstanding support services to distance learners. Several teams and committees support this effort.

MU Distance Education Strategy Team

Purpose:

  • Facilitate increased communication and collaboration across campus to identify and capitalize on resources and opportunities to increase MU's accessibility through distance education.
  • Recommend new policies and revisions to existing policies to increase MU's accessibility through distance education.
  • Coordinate and oversee work of task teams.
  • Advance task teams' recommendations as appropriate.
  • Work with the Chancellor, Provost and Budget Office regarding funding models that support expansion of online learning for campus and distance students.
  • Engage AUs in evaluating policies and practices regarding on-load vs. off-load teaching of online courses toward broader practice of online courses as part of a faculty member's regular teaching load.

Mizzou Online Advisory Council

Purpose:

To advise Mizzou Online about infrastructure and support needs of distance programs. Partners with Mizzou Online to advocate for needed resources from campus. Shares program challenges and successes with other members and other interested parties on campus. Develops strategies for improvement.

Distance Education Operational Team

Purpose:

To develop and implement operational procedures used to support distance students and programs in a manner consistent with MU policies. Enhances and maintains coordination among offices (Mizzou Online, Registrar's, Cashiers, ET@MO, DoIT, Library, SIS, Graduate School, Admissions, Institutional Research, and Financial Aid) to more fully integrate support and services for distance students. Informs MU Distance Education Strategy Team about potential consequences of recommendations under consideration, and about the feasibility of and timeframe for implementing said recommendations.

Distance Student Support Services Team

Purpose:

To assess support services available to distance students to identify gaps in service between campus and distance students (undergraduate and graduate). The Team will review distance student support services provided at select universities, including some that are completely online, to establish benchmarks. The Team will identify services needed or to be expanded upon to be more consistent with services available to campus students, and will make recommendations to the Distance Education Strategy Team prioritized by importance. The Team will propose student success metrics by which services may be evaluated.
