Faculty spotlight

Sam Otten, PhD

Samuel Otten earned his Ph.D. in mathematics education and his master’s in mathematics from Michigan State University. Prior to that, he attended Grand Valley State University and was raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. His research centers on students’ participation in mathematical practices at the secondary level, with a focus on classroom discourse and instructional technology.

John Lannin, PhD

John K. Lannin is the Associate Dean for Student Success and Academic Affairs for the College of Education in addition to professor for the Department of Learning, Teaching and Curriculum. His research focuses on the improvement of the learning and teaching of mathematics in K–12 classrooms. Specifically, Dr. Lannin’s research focuses on student understanding of generality and algebraic thinking. His focus on teacher knowledge has involved deepening our understanding of how the specific knowledge for teaching mathematics develops over time. Dr. Lannin is a former middle and high school mathematics teacher, having taught at three different schools in Nebraska for 10 years.

Corey Webel

Corey Webel typically teaches mathematics courses for prospective elementary teachers, and is the director of the Elementary Mathematics Specialist Certification Program. His research explores how individual and institutional factors can support and inhibit improvements to mathematics teaching, and he is interested in studying how online tools and school structures could be used to facilitate teacher collaboration and learning across contexts.

Tiffany LaCroix

Tiffany LaCroix earned her Ph.D. from Virginia Technological University. She studies secondary mathematics teachers’ beliefs and has experience at elementary, middle and high school levels in mathematics, teaching and learning. She helps advise practicing teachers and teaches some courses in the online graduate programs in mathematics education.
