The University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Science now offers an online master of arts in English — the only online MA in English from a Research I university in the Midwest, and one of five in the United States.

Career applicability

Mizzou’s 100% online master’s in English provides a broad perspective on literature and culture, while encouraging specialization and advanced research work. Building on a bachelor’s level knowledge of English, MA students will gain important skills that they can apply directly to their careers — such as analysis of written texts, oral and written communication, and research.

The online English MA benefits those seeking a career that calls for writing and analysis, and teachers seeking career advancement. Beyond career benefits, the study of literature also offers enrichment and self-improvement.

Nationally recognized faculty

Mizzou’s English faculty design and teach all online courses in the online MA program. Distance students learn alongside on-campus students in virtual classrooms led by these expert scholars and writers.

Faculty include Sheri-Marie Harrison, awarded a 2021 Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence, and Frances Dickey, Director of Online Programs and a T.S. Eliot scholar.

The online English MA program is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2022 semester, with classes beginning in January. To learn more and apply, visit online.missouri.edu/EnglishMA.

The Department of English also offers an 18-credit-hour online graduate certificate, which can be taken as a gateway to the master’s program.
