Apply as post-baccalaureateOverview
The online Gifted Education Certification Preparation program from Mizzou’s College of Education and Human Development is designed to meet the needs of practicing teachers who already have initial teaching certification and are seeking Missouri certification in gifted education. It is intended for those seeking to finish course requirements as a post-baccalaureate student. If you do not have any credit towards this certification and need to take the full 18 hours, or if you are seeking gifted certification through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, it is recommended you apply directly to the gifted education certification program.
The gifted courses in this program encompass all competencies required by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for Missouri gifted certification. The courses also cover initial practice-based professional preparation standards for gifted educators supported by the National Association for Gifted Children. Upon completion of this program, you will be prepared to take the Praxis exam for gifted education.
Note: Mizzou does not administer this exam.
In addition to passing the Praxis, Missouri DESE gifted certification requires that you:
- Hold a valid teaching certificate.
- Complete 18 credit hours in gifted education coursework.
The courses in this certification preparation program also position you to pursue a master's in gifted education. Should you complete the certificate program, you will meet all requirements for the master’s in gifted education program. Furthering your education can help you earn an increased salary and allow you to hone the skills you already utilize every day to teach exceptional students.
